In the summer of 2011, the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) became validated as an assessment centre authorised to conduct needs assessments for the purposes of Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). UHI's validation articulates most clearly into the Responding to Student Needs Enhancement Theme and benefits all UHI students wishing to apply for DSA. It is particularly significant in helping the University support more remote learners, for whom the needs assessment process could otherwise involve incurring the costs of travelling considerable distances to an Access Centre elsewhere in Scotland.
