First things first: the first year in Scottish higher education

The aim of this paper is to refresh and integrate the previous work on the First Year Enhancement Themes within the Scottish higher education system. Two key questions re considered:
What are the current issues or guiding principles that are driving approaches to learning, teaching and assessment in the first year?
What is the guiding principle that underpins the integration of other Enhancement Themes as they impact on the first year?
The publication looks at current issues in higher education that impact on the first year, looks at the challenges for first year learners then looks at engaging and empowering students in the first year through personal development planning
