This paper outlines the background of the previous Responding to Student Needs Enhancement Theme and how this forms an element within the new Graduates for the 21st Century Enhancement Theme that is: endeavouring to share the good practice currently on-going in the sector; and to examine what the lecturer or other classroom-based staff can do to assist in developing graduate attributes in students by responding to their needs in the classroom and/or from a wider academic perspective.

The paper sets the context by looking at graduate attributes and student needs and at good practice in undergraduate education before going on to look specifically at classroom-based activity for responding to student needs. In the discussion, it brings together the outcomes from a workshop with examples from the literature.
