Over 100 university staff and students attended a QAA Scotland event on 5 October to launch the Scottish higher education sector’s new Enhancement Theme 2017-2020 - Evidence for Enhancement: improving the student experience. The Theme will consider what information is useful for universities to help them identify how to effectively improve.

Theme Lead and Vice-Principal of University of Dundee, Professor Karl Leydecker introduced the Theme and its vision. He explained that the three strands of the Theme would comprise:

  • optimising the use of existing evidence
  • student engagement
  • student demographics, retention and attainment

In the afternoon, VP Education Matt Adie discussed the importance of analysing student survey qualitative as well as quantitative data and the usefulness of Student-led Teaching Awards data.

Delegates were given the opportunity to discuss what their key priorities were, generate ideas and decide if they would like to collaborate with another institution on specific aspects. As a result, a number of institutions expressed interest in collaborating around: student centred activity, understanding data/data methodologies and learner/learning analytics.  Delegates also identified the following five priority areas for the Theme:

  • approaches to evidence
  • understanding evidence
  • evidence skills and engagement
  • student focus
  • specific outcome measures (such as retention)

When discussing what success for the Theme will look like delegates said this would involve understanding and using evidence relative to student experience, collaboration and sharing, student-focused matters, and wider context, for example the political environment and other key sector initiatives.

Each institution is due to submit a plan for the Theme on 22 November.
