Peter ScottProfessor Sir Peter Scott

Professor Sir Peter Scott will give one of his first Learning and Teaching Conference addresses in his new Scottish Government appointed role as Commissioner for Fair Access, outlining his ambitions and priorities for widening access within the Scottish higher education sector.

Peter Scott is Professor of Higher Education Studies at the Institute of Education, University College London and was appointed Commissioner for Fair Access by the Scottish Government in December 2016. On his appointment, Professor Scott said: “The greatest challenge facing all Higher Education systems in the world is how to remove barriers to fair access, and reduce the glaring inequalities in participation between haves and have-nots. These inequalities undermine our efforts to build a high-skill economy and, more fundamentally, deny individuals the opportunities that should be available to all citizens in a democracy.” During his keynote address, Peter Scott will prompt delegates to join him in considering whether widening access is a zero sum game.
