Academic structures

In Reflections on Assessment, an argument was made that current academic structures, including semesterisation, have mitigated against formative assessment and that, in a number of institutions, in response, the modular structure has been relaxed in the first semester of the first year in order to lessen the pressure on students. This was not a version of 'dumbing down', but the opposite - a way of helping students towards the attainment of appropriate standards.
